This painting was inspired by the Bible verse John 15:5.

Each piece begins as a hand-drawn original sketch — conceived by hand, then digitally refined to its final form by poet and artist Crystal Shaw.

In this scripture, Christ likens himself to a vine. This work of art is an abstract depiction of the meaning of Christ's statement.

To fully understand Christ's statement "I am the vine", Shaw took time to consider the characteristics of a grapevine.

This is what she found:

Shaw found that it is common practice for vineyards to use a T-shaped structure called a "trellis" to uphold grape vines as the vine grows upward and splits outward.

The central point where the grapevines are called the "head" of the grapevine.

The left and right extensions of the grapevine are called the "branches".

Shaw realized that when Christ spoke about being a vine that brings fruitfulness to believers (the branches), there was also an underlying symbolism of the vine (Christ) that hangs on a structure (the trellis) which looks like the very cross Christ was hung on.

This piece is a tribute to the true vine, Jesus Christ, who took up his trellis (the cross) so we could have fruitfulness today. He was, is, and will forever be The Cross-Bearing Vine.
